According to our policies, students with documented evidence of difficulty learning a second language may petition to take “the equivalent of 1.0 unit of study in one non-English speaking cultural area of study, instead of acquiring second-language proficiency.”
The Registrar will keep a list of established courses, taken from the current Course Catalog, that can serve this purpose. The list is divided into world regions (based on the regional categories used by the international studies program) and will be updated at least once a year. Special topics courses will also be considered as appropriate substitutions on a case-by-case basis.
