All members of the Department of Studio Art faculty are expected to be practicing artists. Their artistic engagement record should demonstrate ongoing participation appropriate for their media and concepts. Because the style of media opportunity varies, in-depth evaluation will be dependent on explanations from the faculty member and those reviewing them. These guidelines, therefore, are general in nature.

Activities that demonstrate ongoing engagement include exhibitions, commissions, residencies, collections, curatorial projects, publications, reviews, workshop and conference presentations, fellowships, grants, film and performance festivals. This list is non-hierarchical and ever-evolving due to changes in media (for instance the growing importance of web-based exhibitions). Peer review is integral to the process as these activities are generally awarded through competition.  

The places where a hierarchy of importance occurs is often related to the focus placed on the individual artist, the degree of competition or on the breadth of audience. For this reason, solo shows could be ranked higher than group shows, national competitions could be ranked higher than local competitions, opportunities with international audiences could be ranked higher than those with local audiences. However, some of these opportunities are limited by the type of work, installation and maintenance time or by funding and our commitment to teaching. Therefore it is important to have these opportunities explained by the artist and their reviewers.
