The Department of Dance, Drama, and Film expects its faculty members to engage in significant work as artists and/or as scholars of theatre, dance and film. This means producing creative works which will be seen by local and national audiences: for example, choreography, film-making, designing, screen
The Department emphasizes that we engage in collaborative art forms that are intended to be performed for audiences and the Department expects its members to create work of high, professional caliber. We stress that the artistic process of work done with Kenyon students for Kenyon audiences must involve a process of the same high caliber — that is, the same degree of preparation, commitment, time and artistic judgment — as the best work done in the field.
We recognize the difficulties of balancing the requirements of theatre, dance or TV/film companies with the demands of a busy collegiate teaching and production schedule. Nonetheless, the Department expects its members to bring their work before audiences beyond the college community: through publications, conference presentations, juried exhibitions, performances and productions. We also urge our faculty to take on additional challenges such as contributing to their colleagues' productions and taking workshops and courses that strengthen and expand their skills and contribute to the curriculum. The Department encourages its members to actively participate in continued faculty development.
The Department of Dance, Drama, and Film places greater emphasis on the quality and the consistency of artistic engagement than on the quantity of the work. We encourage our members to seek out and accept as many opportunities for professional artistic work as can be reasonably balanced with the demands of teaching at Kenyon College.
