Last Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, Governor Mike DeWine signed Ohio Senate Bill 104 into law, requiring that all educational institutions, including private colleges, designate multi-occupancy student restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms and shower rooms for the exclusive use of either the male or female biological sex. Single-occupancy facilities and family facilities may be used by anyone. The deadline for compliance is Feb. 25, 2025.
Kenyon recognizes that the law raises questions and concerns for members of the campus community. Over the next three months, the College will work with key constituencies to understand how the law will impact Kenyon’s campus and develop a plan of action. It also will work to understand how the law intersects with federal legal protections against discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity or gender expression. Kenyon is not alone in this — there are more than 150 institutions of higher education in Ohio, and over 3,500 primary and secondary schools, all of which are committed to the health, well-being and success of their students.
At Kenyon, we believe that equitable access to resources and opportunities is essential to reaching one’s full potential. We also believe that a thriving community is one where everyone can have a full sense of belonging. These beliefs are rooted in the College’s longstanding commitment to the fundamental dignity of all. Kenyon remains committed to these principles and intends to continue to take care of its community to the best of its ability now and in the future, in keeping with its educational mission and values.
