Kenyon’s Parents Advisory Council

Dawn and Larry Wiese P’22 share a message to all Kenyon parents as their time as PAC co-chairs nears an end.

As we start this, our first letter in Talk of the Hill, we also realize it’s our last letter in Talk of the Hill, as our daughter graduates this May (at least we hope she’s graduating ... we haven’t heard otherwise!). We have had the pleasure of membership on the Parents Advisory Council (PAC) and of, for these last two academic years, serving as its chairs. PAC is a group of parent leaders who support and promote the mission and vision of Kenyon College through work with career development, engagement and events, and parent philanthropy. Through our involvement as parents, we have grown to love Kenyon, even more than we did when our excited, and somewhat shy, 18-year-old told us, “I don’t know if I can go to Kenyon ... I think I’ll have too much fun!” For our serious high schooler for whom attending any parties in high school were few and far between, this, combined with the excellent academic experience we knew she’d have ... we were all in! Kenyon has offered her everything we could hope.

This doesn’t mean it’s always been easy. As we all know, our children (now young adults) have dealt with schooling during a pandemic. The concerns about how to manage this have been many. But we have always known that Kenyon has had our students’ best interests in mind. When faculty across the country were expressing vocally that they didn’t want to be back in the classroom, Kenyon’s faculty shared that they wanted to teach in person again — and worked with College administrators to figure out how to make it work. And, when calls for more direct communication to parents emerged, Talk of the Hill was born!

So, as our daughter’s experience at Kenyon nears its end (and she begins her service and philanthropy to Kenyon as an alum), we will happily watch as new parents emerge to work in support of Kenyon’s mission and vision. We will listen as voices continue to celebrate Kenyon — and add their time, treasure and talent to make all that is so special about Kenyon, even better!

With gratitude to Kenyon ... may its Purple Ever Reign!
