Fulbright Focused

Eleven Kenyon seniors and recent graduates, plus two faculty members, were awarded Fulbrights, continuing Kenyon’s tradition of producing international scholars.

Eleven Kenyon seniors and recent graduates, plus two faculty members, have been awarded J. William Fulbright Fellowships, with three seniors selected as alternates. Recipients of the coveted Fulbright fellowship, if they choose to accept it, receive grants to serve as English teaching assistants (ETAs) or conduct research abroad. Kenyon has long been a liberal arts leader in producing these international scholars.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright program provides funding for students and young professionals seeking graduate study, advanced research and teaching opportunities worldwide.

This year’s recipients:  

Liam Berg ’21, a Chinese major with a concentration in environmental studies from Oak Park, Illinois, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Taiwan. 

Alyssa Dowling ’22, a political science and Russian double major with a concentration in neuroscience from Spartanburg, South Carolina, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Kazakhstan. 

Willow Green ’21, a dance and English double major from Raleigh, North Carolina was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Israel.

Lara Hoffer ’22, an international studies and religious studies double major with a concentration in Islamic civilization and cultures from Hanover, New Hampshire, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Uzbekistan.

Samuel Hosmer-Quint ’22, a history and Spanish double major from Columbia, Missouri, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Colombia.

Spencer Huffman ’17, a drama and English double major from Chicago, Illinois was awarded a fellowship to conduct research in Hungary supported by a Fulbright study/research award.

Ariella Kissin ’22, an English and political science double major and Russian minor from West Hempstead, New York, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Azerbaijan.

Sarah Pazen ’22, a Spanish major and studio art minor with a concentration in Asian studies  from Glencoe, Illinois, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in South Korea.

Emmy Roday ’21, an Arabic and English double major was awarded a fellowship to teach English in the Palestinian Territories (West Bank).

Abby Timmins ’22, a psychology and Spanish double major from Charlottesville, Virginia, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Spain.

Hayden Toftner ’22, a German and political science double major from Delaware, Ohio, was awarded a fellowship to teach English in Germany.

In addition to the eleven finalists this year, three students were designated as alternates: Emma Banks ’22 (Greenland), Betania Escobar ’22 (Colombia) and Olivia Kane ’22 (Croatia).

Nato Expert

Professor of Political Science David Rowe has been selected as the NATO Security Studies Fulbright Fellow in Brussels, Belgium. He will be working in conjunction with the German Marshall Fund and the NATO Division of Public Diplomacy on the future of the Atlantic alliance.

Coding Theory Researcher

Professor of Mathematics Noah Aydin has been selected as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar to Algeria for the 2022-2023 academic year. Aydin plans to do research in algebraic coding theory and code-based cryptography (CBC) at University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB) in Algiers.
