Historical Marker
Wayman Chapel AME Church Historical Marker.

Please join us at the Kenyon Wright Center, at 400 South Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon, to celebrate the historic marker granted by the State of Ohio in honor of Knox County's first Black church, Wayman Chapel AME Church.

This will be the third marker that resulted from the efforts of Kenyon students in the American Studies Department. The research done to prepare the application to the state was done largely by students in Professor Ric Sheffield's "Diversity in the Heartland" course.

The celebration for this historic marker installation for the Wayman Chapel AME Church will be Saturday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. The church is located on West Ohio Avenue, two blocks from the Wright Center. Parking is located on South Gay Street, adjacent to the Wright Center building.

After brief remarks and photos at the church, a reception with light refreshments will follow on the third floor of the Kenyon Wright Center with remarks by Kenyon faculty, students, local government officials and community members.
