Join the Program in Islamic Civilization and Cultures in celebrating the recent book "Across the Worlds of Islam," which includes many contributions from Kenyon faculty and alumni, at a series of talks and a celebratory concert.
Each of the chapters in "Across the Worlds of Islam" addresses the marginalization of Muslim people, practices, values, perspectives, rituals, narratives and perspectives among non-Muslims and other Muslims in a variety of times and places.
"Across the Worlds of Islam" (Columbia University Press, 2023) features the work of eight Kenyon scholars — as well as new work by keynote speaker Teena Purohit '95.

A Kenyon Approach to Understanding the Margins of Islam

In this session, chapter authors will briefly describe their contribution to the volume, emphasizing how their undergrad and/or life experiences led them to approach the study of Muslim histories and cultures. The conversation will then transition to a seminar-style discussion among the panelists and all those in attendance about the ways our personal life experiences along with a liberal arts education affect how we understand Islam and Muslim cultures.
Keynote: Sunni Chauvinism and the Roots of Muslim Modernism

Teena Purohit '95, associate professor religion, South Asian studies and Islamic studies at of Boston University, will give the keynote address.
Celebratory Concert
