"Soup and Ideology" (2021) is a critically acclaimed documentary film about the Jeju Uprising on April 3, 1948, in South Korea. The Jeju Uprising is examined through the lens of a family story of zainichi Koreans in Japan. The director, Yang Yonghi, is entrusted by her mother, who is losing her memory due to Alzheimer’s, with not only delicious soup recipes, but traumatic memories of a massacre whose discussion remains the biggest taboo in South Korean history.
