The Writing Center Community welcomes any Kenyon writers (students, staff and faculty) at any stage of their writing process. If you don't know what your process is yet, we can help you there, too! When we write "any stage," we mean brainstorming ideas, polishing prose, practicing speeches or presentations, being a conversation partner for our international students, and more!

We keep track of what we our most popular areas of support are for students at Kenyon. Last year, we were tasked with helping students most often with the argumentative flow of their work, followed by questions about the way the work was completing analysis, followed by questions about how the writer was articulating their ideas. We're excited to see what we'll help with most this year!

You can make an appointment for either consultants or liaisons and schedule to meet in the center on Chalmers Library floor two (2) or to meet remotely using the platform (directions on how to do so are on our YouTube channel and also available on our homepage at the bottom).

The Writing Center is open for walk-in and liaison hours Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., Monday and Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., and Friday from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

These questions are ones most commonly asked by students, staff, and faculty.

We’re located on Chalmers Library floor 2 between rooms 210 and 216. We also reserve private study rooms, but you can generally find our tutors at one of the four, circular tables in the open area.

You can always meet with a tutor online, in the comfort of whatever area of campus works for you. To find out more about online appointments, visit OWL.Kenyon.edu and look at our handout (skip to page 3). We also offer asynchronous writing and grammar guidance on our YouTube channel. (We currently have 23 videos but will be adding to them as the semester progresses.) Also please know that we hire our tutors to be compassionate listeners. They will not judge you and can meet with you in one of the private study rooms in Chalmers Library.

We also host many workshops throughout the semester, you can see them all as you scroll down to find our handouts. Thrive Through Thursday begins Thursday, August 29, at 11:10 a.m. in Chalmers Library room 302. We also offer several academic enrichment programs through the writing center that provide weekly (or biweekly) one-on-one support. So, if you’re interested in writing accountability, improving your writing, enriching your academic skills, or enhancing your conversational English, visit that section of our website to find out more.

To find out areas in which our tutors have experience if you're looking for more discipline-focused support, you can visit this page of our Kenyon website. We also have a "limit to" option on our OWL.Kenyon.edu scheduling page that allows you to see each tutors' areas of focus.

Yes! Our tutors love helping with creative and unique writing that isn’t for a particular assignment. We also help with writing for applications like the Office of Career Development. So, if you’re working on a personal statement, a resume or a thank you email after an interview, we can help you with that work, too!

We store all of our writing handouts and guidelines on our Kenyon homepage (scroll to the bottom). We've listed each source in alphabetical order.

We hire new tutors each semester. Find out more about this campus job. Our fall 2024 positions are full, but we’ll be doing interviews for spring 2025 in October and November. Keep your eye on Handshake to see when we advertise the position.

In addition to our YouTube channel, you should follow us on Instagram @KenyonWCC for the most up-to-date information, pictures of Director Anna Scanlon’s dog, Dottie, and reading recommendations!

Yes! The tutors have helped several faculty and staff members with the writing they're doing for publication, for tenure track, or for other academic reasons. We also help with your assignments for your courses. Would you like a second set of eyes on something before you pass it out to your students? We can look at it through our COP (Commenting on Prompts) Program. You can also find out more about the other ways we help faculty and staff by visiting that section of our website.

Absolutely! We love staff referrals. You can use the same Google Form to refer a student as they use to refer themselves. Just answer the questions and let Director Anna Scanlon (scanlon1@kenyon.edu) know if you have any follow-up comments, questions or concerns!
